What activities do you participate in? Staying active outside is always my preference. I love to hike, snow ski, bike and trail run. I just began swimming inside because of an injury. Great change of pace and a tough workout!
What are your goals? My goal is to get the most out of my time here. I want to share with my children and grandchildren the benefits of staying active. With the help of my Get Fit Families coach, my 2010 goals are to run the ½ marathon in Pittsburgh, a full marathon midyear and participate in a ½ triathlon.
What's your favorite food? Any seafood while on vacation in New England!
What's your favorite song, band or music to listen to when exercising? I like Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, Neil Young and BB King
If you could pick one athlete to talk to or workout with, who would it be and why? I have to go with Heinz Ward. He gives 110% at all times. Is a great mentor to the younger players and does it all with his signature smile beaming!
What is your favorite sports drink and energy fuel? Perpetuem, Heed and Shot Bloks.
What is the one race or competition you would like to do once? I don’t know if there is one race that I need to do so I will go to my favorite race. It was an annual unsanctioned Race through Indiana Dunes State Park on the southern shore of Lake Michigan. About 50 of us would bike, swim and run through the park while the Rangers looked the other way. We could get away with it back then. The running course was the hardest thing I have ever done. It had it all. Hard pack trails, loose sand, large sand dunes to climb and descend and a long run down the shore line. The swim was always easy. There is always a lot of shoreline current to carry you. The roads were empty, flat and fast. The natural beauty of the park, with the city of Chicago in clear view across the water at the finish made the effort even more worthwhile. I go back there to hike, run and reflect as often as I can.
List some of your major athletic or health accomplishments? I guess I should stick to current events… After surgery a few years ago I stopped exercising and gained a considerable amount of weight. In 2007 I was encouraged to join the Why Weight program at the local YMCA. I took the challenge and lost 57 pounds. The program resurrected my will to lead a healthy life style again. Encouraged by my Get fit Families coach and friends, I ride almost every weekend. I spin inside at least 2 times every week, run and swim. My 6 year old and I go on rides now. I love it when he wants to stop and fuel up with his own Power Bar. Our longest ride so far is 13 miles. The best part is we get to do it together. For those who know me, fear not, my 4 year old daughter and wife are not far behind. I think by next year we will be learning how to draft!
