Some Alarming Facts

You can not produce health by taking pills to treat disease or symptoms.  This does not address the core issue of cellular homeostasis. Pills may make you feel better, but they will never make your cells function better, and they do not correct the underlying cause of the lack of proper cell function.

Sadly, drugs are toxic poisons to your cells, and they actually decrease cell function. Even though they make you feel better, you get sicker and sicker while on them.

"Drugs never cure disease. They merely hush the voice of nature's protest and pull down the danger signals she erects along the pathway of transgression. Any poison taken in to the system has to be reckoned with later on even though it palliates present symptoms. Symptoms may disappear, but the patient is left in worse condition, though unconscious of it at the time." - Daniel Kress M.D.

"Therapeutic drug use each year kills as many as 198,000 people, 8.8 million in hospitals, this accounts for 28% of all hospital admissions and costs as much as 182 billion dollars." - Journal of American Medical Association, 1998

There are 25 million pills consumed every hour of every day of every week of every year in the U.S.

Medical care represents 14% of the Gross National product, reaching a total of 1.6 trillion dollars in 2003.  Should this not make the U.S. the healthiest nation in the world?  Should this not result in less disease each year?

The U.S. consumes 60% of the world's drugs, yet it ranks 37th out of 39 countries in terms of health of the population. (There are third world countries which are healthier than us!)

The 2001 heart disease annual death rate was 699,000...The annual cancer death rate 553,251... The Total number of deaths caused by medical intervention is conservatively estimated 783,936 for 2001. This equivalent to 7 jumbo jet crashes every day for the entire year. However, to put this in perspective of tragedy and human loss, these numbers are equivalent of two 9/11 disasters every day of the year.

Although it seldom receives media attention, the other drug problem (prescription and Over the Counter drugs) in America, takes a larger toll -- in terms of lives, health and money -- than all the illegal hard drugs combined

Aspirin alone sends about 1,600 people to the hospital each year...They die from gastric bleeding.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the average American senior citizen is given more than fifteen prescriptions each year. (Which may not have been tested to see how they work together).

The Pharmaceutical industry spends more than $10 billion each year to market its products, which is way more than they spend on researching the safety and efficacy of their drugs.

"Only 15% of all medical procedures are scientifically validated." - Dr. David Eddy, M.D., Ph.D.   Every year, for at least 50 years, there have been more medical doctors, more nurses, more drugs, more hospitals and more money spent per person in North America than most other industrialized nations.  Yet, every year the rates of chronic sickness and preventable death increase!

The system is not working. This system can not work to increase health because it is not designed to. The only way to create health is through good exercise, good nutrition, and a properly functioning nervous system.  Exercise is proven to help your entire body function more efficiently, while good nutrition allows your cells to work without having to steal nutrients from other areas of your body.  The practice of chiropractics removes the interference between your brain and every cell in your body.

The best part is...exercise, good nutrition and chiropractic care will not make you light-headed, nauseous, tired... and they will not cause a bloody nose, sudden or severe weight loss or weight gain, depression, suicidal thoughts or tendencies, diarrhea or mood swings.

Side effects do include a healthier body, a better feeling of self, more energy, better digestion, better sleep habits, increased libido, softer skin, better memory, decreased pain, easier weight loss, etc.

Can over-consumption of soy can upset your hormonal balance?

Some plants have thorns, a bitter taste, or even toxins to prevent predators from consuming it.  The soy plant, however, is very sneaky. "The soy plant develops a plant estrogen that, when repeatedly devoured by a pest, results in hormonal changes to the predator, interrupting its reproductive cycle!" Now...what happens when we eat soy?

Long ago, soy was not considered an edible crop. It was used in plant-rotation to replace nitrogen back into the soil. However, take into account that in 1980 we were more concerned about health and that in 2004 we were more concerned about money.  This helps explain the deceitful marketing strategies used to raise profits of the soy industry from $2 million in 1980 to over $300 million in 2004.

Soy is used by celibate monks in Asia to dampen their libido.  Japanese wives are said to slip their husbands extra tofu when their sexual appetites are getting to be too much.

Increased use of soy formula is suspected as a leading cause of premature sexual development.  Does it seem unusual to you that -- when you were a child -- a "late bloomer" was someone who had not shown signs of puberty by the age of 17. Now, if a young woman is not a 36B  by the age of 13, this is considered unusual.  A team of researchers at Lehigh University studied the effects of soy isoflavones on rodents, and they showed that the onset of puberty was "significantly accelerated."  The leader of the team, Professor Jill Schneider, commented that she and some investigators asked the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to not allow soy manufacturers to claim their products are good for health.

Soy infant formula provides 6-11 times more isoflavones per body weight than the dose needed to cause hormonal changes in adults. Children consuming soy formula have shown much greater tendencies toward developing autoimmune thyroid disease and diabetes.

The FDA has not approved Soy as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe). Two senior scientists at the FDA stated, "Consumption of isoflavons during pregnancy could be a risk factor for normal brain and reproductive tract development."

Menopausal women are thought to derive some relief from hot flashes and other typical symptoms due to soy's ability to mimic estrogen. However, in October 2002, the British Government's Committee on Toxicity in Foods (COT) released their assessment of soy products. An expert noted, "As for claims that these products improve hormonal balance, prevent prostate cancers, prevent heart disease, stop osteoporosis and improve brain function, the COT found no proof of any of this."

Soy is also noted to depress thyroid function.  Suppression of the thyroid has been noted with as little as 2 tbsp. of soybeans per day. Research in Japan showed that 1 ounce (30 grams) of soybeans daily over the course of 3 months caused enlargement and suppression of the thyroid. Symptoms and functions returned to normal once the use of soy was discontinued.

Most soy that is consumed is unfermented soy. Unfermented Soy is very difficult to digest. It contains chemicals which interfere with digestion and may lead to pancreatic disorders. The Chinese learned that fermented soy was easier to digest.  In addition, it has anti-cancerous substances called aglycones. In today's unfermented soy products such as tofu and soy milk, the aglycones are present, but in a much different form, and they are NOT anti-cancerous.

Please remember it is only a myth that the Asian diet is soy-based. The soy that they do eat is fermented, and it is only used in small amounts (usually as condiments). In China, protein from pork and grains far outweighs that obtained from soy and all other legumes combined.

  • TIP: Use fermented soy products like tempeh, tamari, miso, and natto. These may have anti-cancerous effects.

Cholesterol Is Not The Villain It Is Portrayed As!

Did you know your body makes three times more cholesterol than you typically eat?

Cholesterol helps to keep our cells healthy. It aids in the creation of sex hormones, facilitates proper brain and nervous system function, and it is needed to synthesize sunlight into Vitamin D.  Rising cholesterol levels can be a sign that something is wrong in the body; however, elevated levels do not necessarily mean that you should jump on a cholesterol lowering drug.

Unless cholesterol is oxidized, it creates no harm. Consequently there has been much emphasis placed on ways to prevent LDL (bad cholesterol) from being oxidized in the bloodstream.  Olive oil is one substance that has been shown to inhibit the oxidation of LDL cholesterol.

Menopausal women have been studied because they often take cholesterol lowering drugs.  When women reach menopause, their LDL levels rise dramatically.  This elevation is interpreted as risk for heart disease.  However, the greater risk comes from other common symptoms of menopause, such as hypothyroidism (with symptoms of weakness, cold intolerance, weight gain, decreased sweating, migraines, etc.). These risks are compounded by obesity, a sense of isolation, hypertension, smoking and a sedentary lifestyle.

The cholesterol rise during menopause is actually protective. Cholesterol is needed to create progesterone and estrogen, and -- since hormones levels dramatically drop at this time -- cholesterol is used to help balance hormone levels. This is why it makes no sense to push menopausal women to take cholesterol-lowering drugs.  These drugs only inhibit the body from its natural efforts to get back in balance.

The public has been trained to believe that artery clogs are due to cholesterol and saturated fats. This is not so. Dr. Bernhard Hennig from the University of Kentucky claimed that polyunsaturated fats are the culprits in the cardiovascular disease process, and he recommended limiting their intake.  When artery clogs are examined, 74% of the total fats are unsaturated and more than half of those fats are polyunsaturated (Trans fats).

Companies make claims that eating polyunsaturated fats (margarine) can lower your cholesterol levels.  However, according to some researchers, a high intake of polyunsaturates actually weakens cell membranes. When this occurs, cholesterol comes to the rescue once again. Cholesterol enters the cell membrane in order to stabilize and restore proper function. The cholesterol that does the rescuing is drawn from the bloodstream, thereby lowering cholesterol levels within the bloodstream.  So the claims made by these companies are not complete lies; however, your health is not the first priority in selling these products.

So...What can you do?

  •  A diet higher in Omega 3 fatty acids (fish, flax, walnuts) helps to maintain healthy cholesterol ratios. Olive oil, as stated above, is shown to inhibit oxidation of LDL cholesterol.
  • Limit your sugar intake, since sugar can contribute to higher LDL cholesterol levels.
  • An additional and very effective benefit is gained through exercise and maintaining proper weight. Even moderate exercise, such as walking, creates healthy changes in the body and a decreased demand for the LDL cholesterol.
  • Antioxidants inhibit oxidation. Some good sources of antioxidants are fruits (raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, peaches and plums), vegetables, red wine and vitamin E. If you are not a vegetable lover, supplementing with a high quality Multi-Vitamin, Vitamin C and Vitamin E, Selenium or CoQ10 could be very beneficial.

Eating the Right Fats Can Help You Lose Weight

Recent studies highlight the importance of essential Omega-3 fatty acids in fighting heart disease and inflammatory conditions.  These fatty acids - found in fish, walnuts, flax, etc. -- also boost the immune system and have been shown to protect against cancer.

Cultures that have been studied for their health -- where fish was not a substantial part of their diet -- consumed large amounts of cheese, butter and fresh milk and beef from cows that were allowed to graze on pasture only.  The common factor between a fish-based culture and a fresh beef and milk culture is that all the foods mentioned are high in Conjugated Linolenic Acids (CLA). CLA is an anti-carcinogen (also found highly in lamb and buffalo).

CLAs have been shown to inhibit the growth of human breast cancer cells, malignant melanoma, colorectal and lung cancer.  They also can lower LDL cholesterol - the "bad" cholesterol.

Is it only ironic that -- according to the USDA -- in the past twenty years, beef consumption has dropped 50%, yet heart disease rates have remained high. This proves, it seems, that heart disease is not caused by good animal fat.

Currently, the consumption of CLA is one-third that of what is necessary to even offer cancer protection. As well, the CLA levels in milk today are one-third that of what they were in 1960 (due to pasteurization and other processes).

Why are we fatter than ever before...yet we eat low-fat and no-fat foods? Eating the essential fatty acids (in beef, cheese, dairy and fish) helps our bodies metabolize other fats more efficiently, thereby contributing to weight loss. Human studies have shown that consuming moderate amounts of CLA for three months without dieting resulted in as much as 20% loss of body fat.

Supermarket beef and milk is not recommended for anyone. Cattle raising practices have become laced with hormones, antibiotics and pesticide residue from the grains fed to the animals. Plus, it has an overabundance of Omega 6s with an extremely low amount of Omega 3s and CLA (Omega 3 & 6 are supposed to be equal in the diet to get the most benefit). Therefore, it is more beneficial to purchase beef or buffalo that has been allowed to graze on grass alone (rather than on hormone laden grains).

The downside of commercial milk is the homogenization process it goes through. Homogenization blends the fat globules with the rest of milk.  However, the milk fat contains an enzyme called Xanthine Oxidase (XO), which damages arterial walls and therefore is a suspected cause of heart disease. Also, when milk is pasteurized, many protective health-promoting nutrients are destroyed.  This may explain the sudden rise in heart disease that occurred within 2 years after the introduction of pasteurization.

CLA intake is related to a 74% decreased risk of breast cancer and its recurrence. It has been proven that women with breast cancer have lower CLA levels in their blood than those without the disease.

When CLA is ingested, it becomes part of the immune system, which identifies whether or not a particular cell is a normal cell or a cancer cell. So, think of CLA as a really good detective. If there is a lack of CLA, cancer cells are not as easily recognized and are less likely to be killed by the immune system.

TIPS:

  • To get the best nutrients (CLAs), do not run to a local drug store.  They are the most digestible and most nutritious in their natural form found in nature.
  • Most people think they cannot afford to eat organically raised beef. Surprisingly, it is the same price or cheaper because the farmers who raised grass fed only animals, do not have the high overhead of buying hormone and pesticide laced grains or for the hormone shots to get the beef to grow faster than normal.
